The Director-General, Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), Prof Oshita Oshita has said that Nigeria’s diversity is a resource for greatness and not a liability in any form.
Oshita stated this in Owerri while inaugurating the Imo Peace Advocate Corps in a statement issued by Mr Abu Mike, Media Assistant to Oshita, on Friday in Abuja.
Oshita commended President Muhammadu Buhari’s position and insistence that the unity of Nigeria was not negotiable.
“I commend the Federal Government’s deportment of non-negotiability of the unity of Nigeria.
“I also wish to reiterate that Nigeria’s diversity is a resource for greatness for the country and not a liability to it in any form.
“Nigeria will remain powerful and far better off as one single entity than when disintegrated,” he said.
The IPCR boss condemned adverse sentiments and violent conflicts aimed at thwarting the efforts of the Federal Government.
He explained that violent conflicts in the country had remained the worst challenge to its progress and development in recent times.
Oshita said had expended over nine trillion naira to curtail violent crises in the country since 2012.
He described the amount as huge, saying it could have been spent on development-related projects.
He commended the Imo Government for establishing the Peace Advocate Corps, but warned against militarising the outfit.
According to him, peace issues are delicate and require a more scientific approach in handling them.
He said IPCR had, earlier in 2013, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Imo Government towards designing and running some peace promotion activities in the state.
According to him, IPCR is prepared to build the capacities of the Peace Advocate Corps members in mediation and negotiation, among others.
Oshita appealed to Governor Rochas Okorocha to provide IPCR with an office to make to take ownership of the peace activities and intervention of IPCR in the state.
